SMYRNA (AP) — Authorities say a Smyrna man has been shot and killed during an armed confrontation with a state trooper and a deputy sheriff.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland says the shooting in Smyrna happened just before 8 p.m. Tuesday in a home on Smyrna Center Road. He identified the deceased man as 61-year-old Kenneth Kreyssig.

McCausland says police were called to the home Kreyssig shared with his elderly mother when family members reported that he was suicidal.

The trooper and the Aroostook County sheriff’s deputy were not injured. McCausland says they’ve been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard following a police-involved shooting.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating.

Smyrna is about 14 miles west of Houlton.
