LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine is pleased to announce that “Girls on the Run” is coming to Lewiston.
The running club for girls in grades 3-5 will be offered this spring. Girls on the Run is a national organization that offers an athletic curriculum to “teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games.” Each practice includes discussions of self-esteem, body image and confidence that are incorporated into the workout.
Girls on the Run is for girls of all athletic experience and abilities and the program emphasizes achieving workout goals at any speed.
The program will culminate in a celebratory 5k with all of the teams in the state, to highlight the girls’ accomplishments.
The YWCA team will be free of cost for participating girls through a generous scholarship from Girls on the Run Maine.
Practices will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5:30, beginning March 24 at the YWCA. The team will run on the trails behind the YWCA and Lewiston High School. Buses will be available to bring girls from Farwell, Montello, Geiger and McMahon to the YWCA with parent permission. Adult supervision will also be provided for girls walking from Longley and Martel to the YWCA. Girls will be expected to have transportation home.
Registration opened Feb. 11. Parents or guardians can register children online at girlsontherunmaine.org/spring-2015-program-registration. Paper registration is also available at the YWCA. The team will be up to 15 girls and registration is first come first served.
