HOULTON — A cat found nearly frozen in a snowbank is coming back to life.
Anna is recovering at the Houlton Humane Society and is eating five cans of food a day.
The shelter said someone left Anna outside two weeks ago. She was found laying in a snowbank at night with wind chills of 25 below.
Shelter officials said Anna likely will suffer permanent damage because of the exposure.
“Her ears are actually going to fall off. They’re quite frostbit on the top, which happens to cats when they’re outside because the skin is so thin, and the pads of her feet are also falling off due to frostbite,” Heather Miller, executive director of the Houlton Humane Society, said.
The Animal Refuge League in Westbrook said this has been the worst they’ve seen for animal frostbite.
No one has claimed Anna. The woman who found her said she will set Anna up in a new home once she’s fully recovered.
