AUGUSTA (AP) — A Fairfield woman convicted of kidnapping her children and driving them to South Carolina has been sentenced to five months in jail.

BethMarie Retamozzo was sentenced Friday after being convicted of two counts of criminal restraint by a parent.

The children were in the legal custody of their grandmother, Retamozzo’s mother, after Retamozzo surrendered custody to enter the military.

Prosecutors said the 36-year-old woman abducted her then 7-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son in Augusta 2013.

Three days after they disappeared, she and the children were found in South Carolina, en route to Florida.

Retamozzo’s attorney said there was some confusion on what his client was allowed to do with the children.
