Wallace H. White, Jr., and the citizen movement in Lewiston city politics got added impetus at the Civic Alliance, Wednesday night. Wallace White spiked the attacks made upon him by the democratic orators and nailed the misrepresentation severely. The substance of the speech was the statement made public Wednesday afternoon thru the Lewiston Journal. Olfene’s Supermarkets of Lewiston and Auburn have purchased two large Shop ‘N Save Markets in New Hampshire, it was learned today. Richard B. Olfene, executive of the well-known Lewiston-Auburn concern, said the stores are located in Gorham and Berlin. Olfene said there is no plan to change the operation or personnel of the newly-acquired stores. Olfene said it was planned, in the near future, to bring the newly-acquired units under the same advertising program as used for the Lewiston-Auburn stores, in addition to a local advertising program. The first store of the four-store group was founded in Auburn in 1889, and has continually operated in that city. Nearly three years ago, a new Olfene’s store was opened on Sabattus Street, Lewiston.

The Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, a regional planning commission, has been awarded two separate grants to produce and publish a ground water protection manual. The council originally applied for and was awarded $5,250 from the state Department of Environmental Protection for the handbook, which was to focus on “point source” pollution, according to Fergus Lea, planning director. “Then the state received a mandate from the federal government to do a nonpoint source pollution strategy,” he said. That refers to “anything that can contaminate ground or surface water that doesn’t come out of a pipe,” he said. A second grant from DEP for $4,350 will allow that portion of the problem to be researched and included in the manual.
