EAST DIXFIELD — A garage fire on Green Street in East Dixfield destroyed the owner’s lifetime collection of tools and his 1959 Harley-Davidson motorcycle Wednesday.

Charlie Green was working on a snowmobile in the garage and started the wood stove to dry out the seat, he said at the scene. He went into his home for a cup of coffee and found the garage on fire when he came back.

“I had a lot of automotive stuff in the garage that went very quickly,” Green said. He does some automotive work, builds motorcycles and works on snowmobiles in the winter, he said.

“Our concern was a home that was about 10 feet away,” East Dixfield fire Chief Randy Hall said. The fire was reported at 3:06 p.m. and is believed to have started around the wood stove.

Green Street is off Route 2 near R.S. Osgood & Sons.

There were no problems fighting the fire, Hall said. Jay Fire Department hauled water.

Firefighters from Dixfield, Peru, Jay and Wilton helped at the scene. NorthStar and Med-Care ambulances stood by. A Wilton police officer helped with traffic.
