1921 – 2015
AUBURN — Phyllis I. Mixer, 93, a resident of Schooner Estates and formerly of Mechanic Falls, passed away Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, at her home.
She was born in Minot on May 11, 1921, a daughter of Lewis and Ola (Downs) Mixer. Phyllis was educated in local schools, graduated from Mechanic Falls High School and Auburn Maine School of Commerce and remained a lifelong resident of the Minot and Mechanic Falls community.
She worked for a number of years as a bookkeeper in the office at the Continental Mill in Lewiston. Upon leaving the mill, she worked in administration in the finance department at Bates College for more than 20 years until her retirement in 1986.
Phyllis was a longtime and active member of the Woman’s Literary Union. She was also a supporter and volunteer for public television while working at Bates College.
In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and loved visiting with her nieces and nephews and their families. In her earlier years, she enjoyed traveling with her friends, and most recently she loved participating in the activities and excursions at Schooner Estates.
She was a loving, devoted and hardworking aunt, sister and friend who will be dearly missed.
Phyllis leaves behind a sister, Esther Rounds of Vermont; a sister-in-law, Mary Mixer of Stonington; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Edwin Mixer and Lewis Mixer Jr.; and by three sisters, Ethel Kelley, Dora Fogg and Marion Milligan. She was also predeceased by her very special aunt, Esther Tracy, with whom she lived for many years in Mechanic Falls.
