LEWISTON — Looking to achieve personal fitness in a non-threatening and welcoming environment? The YWCA is pleased to announce three new programs.

Mommy and Me; Strength, Stretch and Core; and Total Body Blast are three new classes coming to the YWCA. These non-aquatic classes will be offered in the gymnasium thanks to a new partnership with fitness instructor Laura Campbell.

Campbell is a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor and a Registered Maine Guide. She is an avid road, trail runner, swimmer and cyclist having completed several marathons and triathlons.

Among her interests are working with clients to establish a personalized “Training Plan,” a plan that changes and adapts as the client’s needs change.

As Campbell contends, “A training regime will only succeed if it works with your life, not against it.” She believes that health and well-being is a multi-dimensional lifestyle choice and one that involves diet advice as well as fitness instruction.

Campbell’s in-home studio in Auburn, affectionately known as “the Big Room,” offers a client-based environment for those who prefer less intimidating workouts from traditional health club settings. She is bringing this philosophy of helping others achieve their personal best to the YWCA in a nonjudgmental and caring environment.

Mommy and Me Boot Camp – (Daddies too!): If you can’t find time to exercise without the kids, why not make them a part of your workout? In this 45-minute session, we will incorporate our little ones into all the exercises you would see in a normal heart-thumping boot camp class: pushups, “kid-burpees,” squats, baby-lunges and lots of running around. All ability levels welcomed with children under 5 years. After class, bring the children to the women’s swim (mommies only) for more fun time activities.

Classes will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays beginning March 9. First class is free; drop in rate is $5 per class or free with fitness membership; fitness punch cards may be used.

Total Body Blast: Total Body Blast is a mix of resistance training and quick bursts of cardio designed to have you sweating and your heart pumping. We’ll be using our bodies to fight gravity with several jumping, lunging, squatting and kick-boxing moves. Just when you think you may have had enough, we will tone that tummy up with the last 15 minutes focusing on “hard-core” core exercises. Modifications may be made. Bring a mat. Great class for stay-at-home moms and dads for when the children go off to school.

Classes will be held from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, March 10. First class is free; drop in rate is $5 per class or free with fitness membership; fitness punch cards may be used.

Strength, Stretch, and Core (and bone strengthening): This introductory fitness class will focus on increasing muscle strength and also incorporate stretching and core work. Participants can expect a variety of weight-bearing exercises that help repair the bone density we often lose as we age. Modifications can be made and beginners of any age are most welcome. Bring a mat.

Classes will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, March 10. First class is free; drop in rate $5 per class or free with fitness membership; fitness punch cards may be used.

Zumba returns

Join Zumba instructor Erin Ball for a fitness party. Ball has been partying with Zumba Fitness since 2010. In June of 2014, she decided to share her passion with this Latin inspired, fun-filled exercise and obtained her certification.

Ball also enjoys running and participates in multiple 5Ks and 10Ks during the warmer months. She will try her hand at the Tough Mountain Challenge at Sunday River this July. In addition to her Zumba interests, Ball has a passion for horses, enjoying both dressage and hunter jumper events. When she isn’t having fun with fitness and horses, she has a rewarding career in state law enforcement.

Classes will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Monday, March 2. First class is free; drop in rate is $5 per class or free with fitness membership; fitness punch cards may be used.
