NORWAY — The public is invited to join internationally renowned architect Phil Hawes, Ph.D., at the Center for an Ecology-Based Economy for two evenings of lectures and discussions, according to a news release.

The title of the two-part series is “From Biosphere 2 to Ecovillage Norway: How the lessons from the world’s greatest experiment in closed-loop living apply to Ecovillage Design and Development.”

The sessions are set for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 13 and 27.

Hawes is widely known for his eight years as principle architect on the Biosphere 2 project in Oracle Arizona. This three-acre enclosed environment housed over 3,000 different species in various constructed biomes including an ocean, rainforest and savannah.

In the first session, Hawes will speak about this experience and relate it to his subsequent work as a teacher and ecovillage designer.

The second session will focus on defining the concept of “ecovillage” and the goal of true sustainability.

A post lecture discussion will explore the potential for ecovillage development in the Western Foothills with the intent of forming a working group for further study and ultimate establishment of a working ecovillage.
