CAPE ELIZABETH (AP) — Runners desperate for a run on a warm, sunny day set a record with the fastest registration for the popular Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in the event’s 18-year history.

Open registration for the Cape Elizabeth race filled up 4,000 slots in 4 minutes and 15 seconds on Friday. The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1Dev5FS ) reported the registration time broke the old record by 17 seconds. The first entrant completed the registration in less than 48 seconds.

The race is scheduled for Aug. 1. Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson is the founder and chair of the event.

There is also a lottery for 1,950 remaining racing bibs. The lottery registration lasts through March 22 and the lottery is scheduled for March 24.
