The dust menace continues to grow worse. The street sprinkling system does not go into operation for many weeks yet. Year after year the public especially in the business sections has to stand the annoyance of dust clouds in March and April. Why not tinker the contract a little and give the streets a bath.
50 years ago, 1965
A total of ten windows, including a bullet-proof outside bank teller’s window, were broken in five separate incidents reported between Bonneau’s Super Market and Talarico’s Restaurant on Lisbon St., Lewiston, during the night. Broken windows were reported at the super market; the new St. Croix Federal Credit Union Building; the South Ave. branch of the First Manufacturers National Bank; Maurice’s Lunch, and at the Henry Hamel residence, at 475 Webber Ave. The only place where entrance was known to be gained was at Talarico’s Restaurant located at the corner of Lisbon St., and Arcadia Ave. The thieves entered the restaurant by pushing in a rear door. No money was taken but a container of spaghetti sauce and meatballs was dumped into the cash register.

Secretary of State Bill Diamond and state Rep James Handy of Lewiston visited with Montello Elementary School students on Tuesday. Diamond and Handy congratulated James R. Bazinet’s fourth-grade class on their efforts in designating March as Maine Month, in honor of the 170th anniversary of Maine’s statehood. Before a gathering of all Montello fourth-graders, Diamond and Handy also discussed Maine history, Maine’s legislative process, the functions and operations of the department of the Secretary of State and civics education.
