LEWISTON — On Thursday, March 19, The Maine Humanities Council will host “Hooked: A Critical Look at Shows We Love” at Guthries in Lewiston.
This is one of four monthly conversations about four binge-worthy shows. Each month, the talks will take a different theme and talk about how it’s reflected in one show. Jason Read, philosophy professor at USM, will guide the conversation. No need to have seen the shows beforehand—he’ll show clips (although there’s no guarantee that there won’t be spoilers in the discussion).
It’s a golden age for TV shows–or rather, just for shows, since anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can watch whatever, whenever. Some of the most intense cultural conversations we have tend to focus around fictional scenarios playing out on the small screen week after week (or hour after hour, as you binge-watch a streaming show). Feminism, loyalty, tragedy, nostalgia, work, family, race, relationships…these themes and more have been tackled in great depth, and with great subtlety, in shows such as “Orange Is the New Black,” The Wire,” “The Sopranos,” “House of Cards,” “Mad Men,” and “Breaking Bad,” to name just a few.
The discussion begins at 7:30 p.m. There is no cover and for more information call 376-3344.
