DIXFIELD — Vietnam Veterans are invited to celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the day all U.S. troops left Vietnam at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, at the American Legion Post in Dixfield.
Gov. Paul R. LePage will issue a special proclamation recognizing Vietnam War Remembrance Day and the 42nd Anniversary, according to a news release.
The director of the Maine Veterans’ Services, Peter Ogden, will be the Master of Ceremony.
The State of Maine has established a recognition program to honor the service and sacrifices of all Maine veterans. The recognition program includes honoring those who were wounded, POWs or those who died in support of combat operations since the beginning of World War II.
The State will present special Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home Certificates and commemorative coins to Vietnam veterans who register prior to the ceremony.
To receive a Welcome Home Certificate and coin, an application should be completed, accompanied by a DD-214 and/or discharge.
The application forms may be picked up at the Mexico Town Office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, or by calling Sheryl Briggs at 364-5665. Applications are also available at the Dixfield Swasey-Torrey American Legion Post No. 100.
Briggs, a retired state representative, sponsored legislation designating March 30 Vietnam War Remembrance Day.
More information on the program can be found on the Bureau of Veterans’ Services’ website at www.maine.gov/dvem/bvs/ and by clicking on the Maine Heroes button on the left side of the page.
