DEAR SUN SPOTS: What is the history of this Sun Spots column? — Curious, via email.

ANSWER: Sun Spots has been asked this question in the past and has referred to the previously published answers to that question. It is reported that this column began in the Daily Sun in 1965, but Sun Spots did not locate any columns from that year in the microfilms available through Google’s news archive. The earliest Sun Spots column found was published Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1972. From that point on, columns were published on Wednesdays and/or Tuesdays for several years before becoming the six-days-a-week column that it is today.

These early Sun Spots columns were published on page 3, the social page. You can see one such column here: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=IT5EXw6i2GUC&dat=19721213&printsec=frontpage&hl=en. After clicking on the link, scroll to page 3. You will see that the column had a different icon than the one we use today. Visit us online and answer our poll: Which do you like better — the retro or current logo?

If you don’t have access to a computer to click on the link, you can visit the Auburn and/or Lewiston libraries and use their microfilm machines to read back issues of the Sun Journal and old Sun Spots columns.

Perhaps a former Sun Spots editor will read this and write in to share the history of this column.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: You are awesome. Know you can help me with this. There was a story in the Sun Journal [March 18] about the Keurig coffee makers and kits that are available so the machine will take any coffee pod, not just the Keurig brand. It didn’t say where the kits are available. Can we get them locally? Thank you for your help. — S.L. in Lewiston.

ANSWER: Sun Spots has seen them in many stores in the Lewiston-Auburn area including Hannaford; Bed, Bath & Beyond; Walmart; K-mart; Rite Aid; and CVS. Some stores have different brands including generic brands. Hope you find one the next time you go shopping and thanks for sending in your question.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Sunday, March 15, at the annual Rainbow Federal Credit Union meeting [which was held at the Franco Center, 46 Cedar St., Lewiston], a lady’s scarf was found in the parking lot across the street. Whoever is the owner, please call Pauline at 207-782-8314. I have the scarf. Thank you.

GOOD MORNING SUN SPOTS: Thank you so much for sharing our “Riding the Bus SHOULD Be Easy!” class information, in your Feb. 21 column. The class was well attended and the instructor, Marsha C. Bennett, transit coordinator, AVCOG, did a great job.

It was wonderful to see in the March 11 column that our area seniors are looking for beginning yoga classes. In addition to the local exercise centers you mentioned, the SeniorsPlus Education Center also offers a yoga class: “Gentle Chair Yoga for Seniors” held Monday mornings from 9-10 a.m., at 8 Falcon Road, Lewiston. The cost is $40 for 8 weeks, or $8 per class for drop-ins. People can register by calling 207-795-4010. Thanks for the good work that you do. — Sue Holmes, Education Center coordinator at SeniorsPlus.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: On March 18, Sun Spots published a request for information about missing members of the Lewiston High School class of 1945. I have learned from her nephew that one of the missing members, Dorothy “Dot” Chin, died in 2013. — L.G. in Turner.
