AUBURN — Curbside collections of bulky household garbage will return this year, city officials said Tuesday.
Denis D’Auteuil, director of public services and acting deputy city manager, said the city will have collections beginning May 4.
Details of what kind of waste can be dumped, how much and when specific areas should have their trash out will be released later this week.
“I think it’s going to be largely the same as we’ve done in the past,” D’Auteuil said. “We are still finalizing things with the vendors.”
In the past, the city has collected truckloads of bulky items, yard waste, old furniture and appliances. The city last funded the curbside collections in May 2012 using funds that would have been spent plowing roads during an especially mild winter.
The collections can cost the city between $45,000 and $50,000 for disposal and tipping fees, and the city and the council have not included them in the budget. Instead, the city has directed residents to take bulky waste and nontraditional household garbage directly to the Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. incinerator on Golder Road.
D’Auteuil said the city will send a brochure detailing the collections. It will be available at city offices, on the city’s website, www.auburnmaine.gov, and on the department’s Facebook page.
