PERHAM — A Perham woman who stabbed a dog Easter Sunday after claiming it was possessed by demons was under the influence of bath salts, according to the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call early Sunday morning to a residence on Perham Road where they found Ashley Doody, 30, threatening to harm herself with a knife, said Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall Sunday afternoon.

Members of Doody’s family who lived at the home were trying to restrain Doody, who did not live there and who was acting aggressively, Crandall said.

During the confrontation, Crandall said Doody, who lives nearby, had attacked and stabbed the family’s mixed-breed dog, Trixie, with a kitchen knife, claiming the dog was “demon possessed.”

Trixie was seriously injured in the attack and lost a great deal of blood, Crandall said. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian and is expected to make a full recovery, he added.

Doody was arrested at the scene by Sgt. Matt Cummings and Sheriff’s Deputy Corey Saucier and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class C felony.

She was taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton where bail was set at $1,000 cash or $10,000 surety, Crandall said.

State animal welfare agents were notified of the incident to ensure Doody does not have access to animals in the future, Crandall said.

Doody’s initial court appearance is set for May 19 in Caribou Superior Court.
