Lewiston cribbage league announces winners

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League will play at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at the Lewiston Memorial Armory.

The winners on April 9 were Val Asselin, first place; Betty Ames and Richard Cloutier, second place, Jeannine Labbe and Terry Lefebvre, third place; Anna Faucher and Dennis Gosselin, fourth place; and Diane Torres and Henry Maheux, fifth place.

The winners on April 16 were Cecile Bussiere and Henry Maheux, first place; Fran St.Pierre, second place; Gerry Roy and Dwight Webb, third place; Pat Records and Arnie Burgess, fourth place; and Bob Allen and George Bussiere, fifth place.

UMC to host bean supper

AUBURN — The Auburn United Methodist Church bean supper will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the church, 439 Park Ave., Auburn.

Community Nature Programs Series to discuss rainbow smelt

TOPSHAM — Cathance River Education Alliance and the Topsham Public Library will present “Our Disappearing Rainbow Smelt” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at the library, 25 Foreside Road, Topsham.

The rainbow smelt is a small fish that lives in estuaries and offshore waters and spawns in shallow freshwater streams each spring. A century ago, streams teemed with these silvery fish. During the last twenty years, numbers have dropped dramatically, and the rainbow smelt is now listed as a federal species of concern. Claire Enterline, Maine smelt expert with the MDMR, will be on hand to discuss this current topic.

Bates college to host community conversation

LEWISTON — Bates College will host a panel discussion to address sexual assult and domestic violence from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at the Bates College Coimmons, rooms 221 and 222.

The discussion will be moderated by Bill Lowenstein with panelists Sabrina Yocono of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, Kelly Glidden of Safe Voices, Sarah Canahan of Tri County Mental Health, Bates Gwen Lexow of Bates, and the Rev. Stephen Carnahan of High Stree Congregational Church.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

SeniorsPlus to hold caregiver training

LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus will hold the Savvy Caregiver 1 training for Androscoggin County from 1 to 3 p.m., Thursdays, April 30 to June 4, at the SeniorsPlus Education Center, 8 Falcon Road.

The class is designed for those caring for family members with dementia, training how to reduce stress and communicate more easily with the loved ones.

This class is free but pre-registration is required. It is sponsored by the Maine University of New England Geriatric Education Center.

Criminal law presentation set for April 30

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Public Library and the Senior College at USM LAC will host a presentation on criminal law from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 30.

Attendees an opportunity to peek into the life of a criminal defense lawyer to see what it takes to represent these clients and to ensure they receive the proper protection and rights afforded to them by the law.

Coping with loneliness explored at Lifetree Café

LEWISTON — Strategies for coping with loneliness will be discussed at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at Lifetree Café, 1919 Lisbon Road.

The program, titled “Isolated and Alone: Imprisoned in Iran,” includes a filmed interview with Sarah Shourd, who accidentally crossed the Iranian border while hiking and was held in solitary confinement for 410 days.

Participants will consider the consequences of loneliness and how they can avoid experiencing it.
