Maine game wardens are seeking information to help find those responsible for the illegal killing of a pregnant deer.

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, wardens responded to a complaint of an injured deer Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Bragdon Road, also known as French Road, and East Road in Chesterville.

Upon arrival, officials said, a deer was found in a field posted “No trespassing” with a fatal gunshot wound to the spine. The doe was pregnant with twins.

Operation Game Thief has offered a $1,000 reward for anyone who can provide information that leads to a conviction of those responsible for what investigators called a “senseless killing.”

A bulletin posted on the Inland Fisheries Facebook page Thursday drew fierce reaction from the public. By late Thursday afternoon, the post had been shared nearly 700 times and hundreds had voiced outrage.

An Inland Fisheries news release said the department was asking anyone with information (you can remain anonymous) to call either OGT at 1-800-ALERTUS (1-800-253-7887) or Public Safety Dispatch in Augusta at 207-624-7076.
