BANGOR, Maine — A man who lost approximately $4,400 in cash over the winter had his money returned to him on Thursday thanks to a Wal-Mart employee, according to Bangor police.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page written by Sgt. Tim Cotton, the man left work on a snowy night, drove home and discovered that his money, which was in an envelope, was gone upon arriving at his residence.

The man returned to where he had parked, between Kobe Steakhouse, where the man works, and Wal-Mart, finding no sign of the envelope. Nothing could be seen on Wal-Mart security cameras, according to Cotton.

On Thursday, Wal-Mart employee Brian Cassidy was picking up trash in the parking lot when he discovered a wet stack of cash under a piece of paper and immediately called store security to verify that some money had been found, Cotton said.

The stack of cash was brought to the office and police called, and Officer Dustin Dow responded to take a report, Cotton said. It was then Dow learned that a man had come to the Wal-Mart security office to report his lost money, and the officer subsequently went to Kobe to try and locate the man.

The Kobe employee, Ou Chen, confirmed to police he had lost the money last winter, and after police took the cash to the station to photograph and count it, all the money was returned to Chen, Cotton said.

Police also presented Cassidy with a challenge coin “for being honest and having great integrity in doing his job,” Cotton wrote.
