1937 – 2015

MONMOUTH — Sandra Ellis, 77, passed away on Wednesday, April 22.

She was born June 28, 1937, to Viola Smith Ellis and Edward “Bill” Ellis in Gardiner. She attended Farmingdale Grammar School and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1955. She served in the Air Force, joining in September 1955.

On Nov. 16, 1956, she married Linwood Arthur “Skip” Baker. After their divorce, she married Arthur “Red” Adams. When they also divorced, she became the loving companion of Bill “Smokey” Howland. They enjoyed many years together, until his death in April 1999.

Sandra had many things in her life she enjoyed being a part of — her loving family, friends, gardening, genealogy, helping with the haying each summer, plus seeing the mallard ducks that visited her farm.

She worked as a cashier, bookkeeper and cook at Cottle’s, which later became Hannaford.

Sandra was a former member of Cobbosseecontee Grange No. 100 for more than 40 years. She was also a member of Mystic Chapter Order of Eastern Star of Litchfield; Clan McBean of North America; Clan MacPherson; Ellis Cousins; Women in Military Services; Maine Genealogical Society; Franco-American War Veterans Post No. 31, Lewiston; Piscataquis Pioneers Society; Maine Sheriffs’ Association; Ducks Unlimited; and the National Rifle Association. She was a life member of Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; sister, Lola May Allen; special grandson, Anthony “AJ” John Baker; sister-in-law, Judith Ellis; aunts; uncles; and cousins.

She is survived by her son, Anthony “Andy” Bruce Baker and his wife, Raeanne, of Hallowell; daughter, Laurie Ann Wheeler and her husband, Rick, of Gardiner; brother, Bruce E. Ellis and companion, Beulah Madden, of Farmingdale; granddaughter, Stephanie Peaslee and her husband, Ed, of South China; granddaughter, Nicole Elliott and husband, Cliff; grandson, Nathan Wheeler; great-granddaughters, Kayla Marie and Natalie June Peaslee; great-grandson, Nicolai Alden-Issac Elliott; nieces; nephews; cousins; special friends, Mary Ehrler of Bethany, Conn., Nancy Crosby of Augusta; and former sister-in-law, Anne Wingate McElroy of Louisiana.
