Here we go again, talking about raising the minimum wage. I understand that the intention is to help those at the very bottom of the wage scale, but I don’t see how raising the minimum wage will accomplish the intended goal.

The people who are paid minimum wage are generally teenagers and adults who lack job skills. I fail to see how raising the minimum price for selling one’s time and effort to an employer will make teenagers more responsible or confer skills to adults who lack them.

Employers will, instead, choose to hire responsible people with skills if they are forced to pay them more, leaving those who this legislation is intended to help in the dust.

How will the people at the bottom gain the responsibility and experience they need to command a living wage if they are never hired in the first place?

Let’s not pave the road to unemployment with good intentions.
