AUGUSTA — One of the Maine groups pushing for a statewide ballot question on recreational marijuana legalization is close to having its petition approved.

Legalize Maine needs state officials to sign off on its petition so it can begin circulating it for signatures. A spokeswoman for the state Department of the Secretary of State says the petition is being finalized and the group is coming in Tuesday morning to receive it. The group will then need to collect at least 61,123 signatures by Feb. 1 so the question can go to the voters in November 2016.

Another group backed by the national Marijuana Policy Project is also planning to get approval for a marijuana legalization petition drive. That group is not quite as far along in the process as Legalize Maine.
