FARMINGTON — A five-game losing streak has dropped the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team into a tie for the final playoff spot in the North Atlantic Conference with just two games remaining in league play.
Thomas beat UMF, 12-7, in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday, sending the Beavers into a tailspin and putting their playoff aspirations in jeopardy.
After Sunday’s NAC games were completed UMF was in a deadlock with Lyndon for the final playoff position. Both teams have compiled a 9-13 conference mark.
UMF and Lyndon have two games remaining on the conference schedule, both teams will play last place Colby-Sawyer. UMF travels to New London, on Monday to face the Chargers in a twin bill, and Lyndon hosts the Chargers in Lyndonville, VT, on Tuesday.
Over the weekend, the Beavers lacked timely hitting in dropping both ends of a pair of doubleheaders against Castleton. The Spartans won three of the games by a total of four runs while handling the other game 15-2.
Sunday afternoon’s opener proved to be the most entertaining when UMF pitcher Riley Chickering tossed a three-hitter, allowing a pair of runs in the first on two hits. Over the next six innings Chickering allowed just one Castleton hit in the 2-1 defeat.
UMF dropped Sunday’s second game, 7-6. Nick Attaliades-Ryan homered for the Beavers. Trevor Hisler, Sean Cabaniss and Dustin McCrossin each connected for a double.
