WINTHROP — The Bailey Public Library in downtown Winthrop will host state historian Earle Shettleworth on at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, as part of the library’s grand re-opening week. The Winthrop Handbell Ringers will perform before the event at 5:30 p.m. during an open house of the newly renovated library hosted by the trustees. Shettleworth will take an “informative and entertaining” look at the governor’s mansion and give selected readings from his new book, “The Blaine House.”
Using old photographs, Shettleworth tells stories of Maine’s first families and famous guests. This is the first in Arcadia’s Images of America series featuring the nation’s governors’ mansions.
Shettleworth has served as the director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission since 1976 and as Maine’s state historian since 2004. A native of Portland, Shettleworth attended Deering High School, Colby College and Boston University and was the recipient of honorary doctorates from Bowdoin College and the Maine College of Art. In 1971, he was appointed by Gov. Kenneth M. Curtis to serve on the first board of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, for which he became architectural historian in 1973 and director in 1976. Shettleworth has lectured and written extensively on Maine history and architecture.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information call 207-377-8673 or visit baileylibrary.org.
