BETHEL — After a year of readings, movie screenings, book discussions and educational programs, the “Local and Legendary: Bethel, Maine in the Civil War” project is coming to a close.
The project began as a collaboration between Gould Academy, the Bethel Historical Society and the Bethel Library Association in 2014.
At 4 p.m. Sunday, May 17, a final celebration will be held in Bingham Auditorium at Gould Academy. It will feature a performance from the Androscoggin Chorale Chamber Singers, society Executive Director Randall Bennett said.
The performance will be directed by John Corrie of Bates College.
Following the performance, a dramatic presentation of the Civil War letters of Pvt. Stephen Richards and his wife, Lydia, of Upton, will be staged.
The Local and Legendary program is part of a collaboration between the Maine Historical Society and the Maine Humanities Council, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. It focuses on bringing Maine libraries and educational and historical organizations together to explore local Civil War history.
Bethel was one of five communities to fund the project.
