LEWISTON — The Police Department is cautioning motorists to be aware that some students and parents will ride bicycles to Geiger Elementary School Wednesday morning, May 6.
It’s the fourth annual Geiger Bike to School day. From 8 to 8:30 a.m., adults and children will ride along College and Ventura streets, then on Central Avenue, crossing Montello Street to the school.
“We’re going to be riding alongside,” police officer Joe Philippon said. He and other members of the Community Resource Team will provide escorts to ensure safety.
“We ask that motorists in the area give us room and drive slowly,” Philippon said. The event attracted about 30 participants last year. “It seemed popular with the kids. The kids seemed to enjoy it.”
It promotes a good way for youngsters to be active and healthy, Philippon said.
Bicyclists are reminded to obey all of the rules of the road, including stopping for stop signs and red lights, and to ride on the right. Children are required to wear helmets, police said.
