1934 – 2015

GALION, Ohio — Ardeen W. “Dean” Ayer, 80, of Galion, Ohio, died Saturday, May 2, at Millcreek Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Galion.

Born June 13, 1934, in Lewiston, he was the son of Carroll A. and Eleanor A. (Daggett) Ayer. He married Virginia M. (Fayle) Ayer on June 25, 1955, and she survives him.

Dean graduated high school in 1953 in Monmouth, and the Maine Vocational Technical Institute, with a degree in electronics. He worked for the former North Electric Co. in Galion as an electrical engineer. In 1963, they moved to New York, where he worked for Loral Electronics and Grumman Aircraft, where he worked on the Lunar Module until 1965, at which time they moved back to Galion and he retired from the former ITT in Galion.

He was a member of the Martel United Methodist Church and the Galion Lodge 303 Loyal Moose, was a former Cub Scout and Boy Scout master. He enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening, woodworking and photography.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Bruce A. (Penny) Ayer of Eddington, and Christopher S. (Connie) Ayer of Ontario; and daughter, Marianne Ayer Hunt of Northeast Harbor; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeremy) Caudill, Michael Gorby, Zachary Gorby, Brynli Ayer, Brooke Trine, Rawley Rhinehart and Thomas Rhinehart; six great-grandchildren, Brittany and Zachary Ogden, Charley and Greyson Rhinehart and Maks and Madelyn Caudill; siblings, Charles M. Ayer of Sabattus, Everett F. Ayer of Sumner, Carroll A. (Muriel) Ayer Jr. of Augusta, Nellie C. (Paul) Davidson of Greene, Kim E. (James) Lindhorst of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Carl A. (Sharon) Hutchinson of Bangor.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Gail E. Roberts.
