LIVERMORE — The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center will celebrate the launch of the barn raising from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 30, at 290 Norlands Rd.
The center experienced disaster seven years ago when fire swept through and destroyed the original farmer’s cottage, attached to the 1867 Washburn mansion, and the attached two-story barn. Since then the farmer’s cottage has been rebuilt.
Maine Mountain Timber Frames of Strong will demonstrate some features of how the barn will be constructed. Speakers will include Earle G. Shettleworth, Junior Maine State Historian and director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, and Maine State Legislator Jeffrey L. Timberlake of Turner, who was also a volunteer firemen who helped fight the blaze at Norlands. Other key people who have supported the undertaking through donations and volunteer efforts will also take part in the festivities.
The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony. There will be a door prize drawing for a basket of Norlands’ memorabilia.
