NORWAY — A Bridgton driver likely dozed off Thursday afternoon, May 7, before his car drifted into an oncoming log truck on Route 117, police said Friday.

Norm Luneau, 65, and is wife, Sandra, 63, were seriously injured after their Volvo crossed the centerline on Harrison Road and hit the side of the empty log truck driven by 24-year-old Tyler Libby of Limington, police said.

Libby was not hurt.

Norm was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with a broken pelvis, leg, ribs and arm, Norway Police Chief Robert Federico said. Luneau was in stable condition.

Sandra was taken by ambulance to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway with broken bones, Federico said.

Federico said the Luneaus were exhausted after visiting an ailing relative. Sandra, he said, told police she had been napping, awoke, and then her husband fell asleep at the wheel.

Police said previously that it did not appear Luneau braked before the collision.

Libby tried to avoid a collision and drove into a ditch.

Jeffrey Keene of Lewiston said he was hanging drywall in a nearby building when he heard the truck’s tires screech, turned and saw the car, drifting halfway over the centerline, slam into the truck.

Keene, 23, said he dialed 911 and rushed to the scene. The former health care worker said he and another man made sure there were no flames and cut a seat belt that was choking the driver. They used a shirt for a bandage and stayed with the couple, who were confused but conscious and talking, until ambulances arrived a few minutes later.

Keene said he stayed until the man was taken in the LifeFlight helicopter.

“I wanted to make sure everything was OK. I’ve never done anything like that in my life,” he said. “I hoped it helped. He didn’t know what he did or what he hit.”
