DEAR SUN SPOTS: Are there any walking/hiking groups that are for beginners? Anywhere in central Maine is fine as I don’t mind driving to take a good guided walk in nature. Thank you. — Nature lover.

ANSWER: The Western Mountains Senior College will sponsor a nature hike at Step Falls in Newry and a potluck dinner at the Mahoosuc Mountain Lodge at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 14. Lynne Zimmerman will lead the leisurely one-mile hike to identify spring wildflowers and enjoy the waterfalls. The group will meet at 4 p.m. at the parking area for the Step Falls Preserve, located on Route 26, seven miles north (toward Grafton Notch) from the corner of Route 2.

Hikers should wear appropriate footwear and bring a water bottle and insect repellent. The hike will be followed by a potluck dinner at the Mahoosuc Mountain Lodge, approximately a half-mile back down Route 26 toward Bethel. Participants should bring a dish to share, which can be dropped off at the lodge on the way to Step Falls, or brought with you after the hike. This event is part of WMSC’s Down Home Maine series, and is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Steve Smith at 207-824-3491 or stsmith@pcgus.com.
