AUGUSTA (AP) — Authorities want to crack down on out-of-state drivers who blow through Maine Turnpike toll plazas without paying.
Maine has agreements with authorities in New Hampshire and Massachusetts to punish drivers from those states who don’t pay tolls, including blocking them from renewing their registrations.
But there is no such agreement with New Brunswick, Canada.
The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1RutIb0 ) reported that the Maine Turnpike Authority says the top 20 toll violators from New Brunswick — all tractor-trailers — compiled 548 violations worth more than $4,300. One truck had 88 violations totaling $677.
A bill endorsed by a legislative committee in April would allow the Secretary of State’s Office to suspend the rights of out-of-state violators to operate a vehicle on Maine roads after sending a notice to the offending vehicle’s owner.
