RUMFORD — Mountain Valley’s Jacob Beauchesne and Tim Fitzgerald combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter Monday afternoon at Hosmer Field, helping the Falcons upend Mt. Abram 10-0 in a Mountain Valley Conference baseball game.
Coming off a disappointing loss to Carrabec on Friday, Mountain Valley (4-3) was looking for something to spark the team entering a crucial week in the schedule, when the Falcons face Wiscasset and Hall-Dale in addition to the Roadrunners (2-6).
The Falcons got what they were looking for in the five-inning mercy rule game, scoring six runs in the first, two innings before putting the game away in the bottom of the fifth with four more.
“This was certainly a confidence boost for us,” Mountain Valley second baseman Ian Austin said. “It was a good win to give us momentum at the start of a tough week.”
Beauchesne pitched three innings before giving way to Fitzgerald to start the fourth. Beauchesne faced 11 batters, striking out one and walking two. Fitzgerald notched three strikeouts, facing seven batters.
“Both guys threw the ball well,” Mountain Valley coach Steve LaPointe said. “We played loose behind them and made the plays.”
John Pepin opened the game for the Falcons by ripping a hard line drive to left field. Pepin stole second base and scored on a long double to the gap in left center by Austin for a quick 1-0 lead.
Mountain Valley added five more in the second when the Falcons sent 11 batters to the plate. Austin and Caleb Gauvin provided the big hits in the inning, each driving in a run. Gauvin finished the game with three hits and three RBI while Austin added a pair of singles and three RBI.
“We’ve struggled with the bats,” LaPointe said. “This is the best we’ve hit the ball this year.”
Mountain Valley committed a pair of errors in the five-inning affair, the first coming in the first inning when the Roadrunners’ Johnny May reach first, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on an infield ground ball. Beauchesne, however, induced a fly ball for the final out of the inning.
“We lost a lot of players from last season and have been working hard to find who can play where,” Mt. Abram coach Frank Orcutt said. “Defensive we made some plays but we need to start getting some timely hits.”
