Maine Military & Community Network to hold conference
ORONO — The Maine Military & Community Network will hold its fifth annual statewide conference from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the University of Maine, Wells Commons.
The theme for the event is “Building Resilience in Community.” Dr. Jonathan Shay of Massachusetts, Dr. Richard Lumb of Wilton and Dr. Fred Shotz of Falmouth will present at the conference.
Specific focus will be placed upon the important role communities play in helping Veterans successfully return home after military service.
SMHS students travel to New York City
JAY — Forty-four humanities students from Spruce Mountain High School will travel to New York City by charter bus to see Disney’s “Aladdin” on Broadway, Thursday, May 14. The students will tour the city and visit Battery Park, Ground Zero and Times Square.
Rumford Area Quilters to meet
RUMFORD — Rumford Area Quilters will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Rumford United Methodist Church, Linnell Street, Rumford.
Attendees should bring finished veterans quilts to this meeting and continue work on the Mystery Quilt. Show and tell is welcome, and all area quilters invited.

Daisy Girl Scouts holding sign up, flower party
TURNER — Daisy Girl Scouts will welcome new girls at its flower party and sign up at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Turner Primary School.
The flower party will explore traditions and teach what being a Girl Scout means. Each girl can also make her first swap.
The Daisies are the youngest girl scout members with girls in kindergarten and first grade in the fall. Becoming a Daisy is free, and the program will teach girls about helping the community, will give new adventures and offer a setting to make friends.

Canton plant sale set for May 23

Spaghetti dinner will benefit local couple
PARIS — A spaghetti dinner benefiting Richard and Vicki Foster will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.
Richard Foster has throat cancer, and all proceeds will help cover any out-of-pocket costs for his treatment.

Mill Stream Grange plant, bake sale set
VIENNA — The Mill Stream Grange will hold its 26th Annual Plant and Bake Sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, at the Mill Stream Grange on Rt. 41.
Seedlings are supplied by Longfellow’s Greenhouse ever since. The sale includes a wide variety of flower and vegetable seedlings plus patio tomatoes, perennials, specialty annuals and hanging baskets. Homemade savories include lasagna, enchiladas and baked beans and desserts. The patchwork quilt will be on display for raffle ticket sales.

Rumford Grange to host petting zoo, craft fair
RUMFORD — The Rumford Grange is sponsoring their third annual Petting Zoo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 16.
Their will be a variety of animals to delight the children, including goats, alpaca, lambs, miniature horse, chickens, ducks, geese and other surprises.

Chesterville War Memorial Honor Day to honor veterans
CHESTERVILE — Chesterville will honor its veterans — historical and present — on Armed Services Day.
Chesterville War Memorial Honor Day will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, with an American Legion Honor Guard ceremony at the Honor Roll Monument on the corner of Zion’s Hill and Borough Roads. Veterans of World Wars I and II are inscribed on the monument, which was first dedicated at the close of World War II.
Following the ceremony, the Chesterville Center Meeting House will host a reception with refreshments, exhibits and an open mike for words of remembrance, anecdotes, music or any appropriate tribute to Chesterville veterans.
The public is invited to bring memories, photos, or memorabilia to share. The event is free.

Supper at American Legion planned

OXFORD — American Legion Anderson Staples Post 112 will host a public supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Legion Hall on 169 King St., Oxford.

‘Famous’ chicken pie suppers to begin
HARRISON — The first chicken pie supper of the season at the Bolsters Mills United Methodist Church will be Saturday, May 16.
Suppers will take place on the third Saturday of each month through October. Proceeds will be dedicated to providing scholarships for children wishing to go to Camp Mechuwana this summer, a United Methodist Camp in Maine.
The supper will be held at the Bolsters Mills United Methodist Church in the village of Bolsters Mills in Harrison. There will two seating at 5 and 6 p.m. with a third seating to follow if necessary.
Tickets will go on sale at 4 p.m. The price is $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12. Chicken pies will be sold at the supper if available.

STONEHAM — The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19, held their monthly meeting April 22 at the home of Marilyn Jones in Norway.
The group will attend church services in Stoneham on May 17.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 18, at the grave site of sister Loretta Andrews at Hillside Cemetery.
The next meeting will take place on May 27 at the home of Marilyn Jones where there will be a memorial for deceased DUVCW members.
