Wednesday, the young squad got a look at how far they still have to go.

Six different Brunswick players scored — Kyle Woodruff and TJ Sullivan had three each — as the senior-laded Dragons rolled to a 12-3 win over Lewiston in a battle of previously unbeaten teams.

“They’re a great team, they have a lot of seniors, and I hope my guys learned something from this game,” Lewiston coach Ben Fournier said.

Lewiston’s lowest goal output prior to Wednesday’s loss was in its previous game, a 7-4 win over rival Edward Little. That Brunswick held the Devils in check was a testament to the Dragons’ defense, and to their experience.

“Lewiston is good, they showed a lot of composure for a young group, and we’re senior-heavy,” Brunswick coach Don Glover said. “We’re a veteran team, and tonight was more of that veteran piece showing through.”

Brunswick, meanwhile, has established itself as one of the elite programs in Maine this season. The Dragons have scored 136 goals in seven games, all wins, while allowing only 36.

“They’re one of the best tests out there, especially for a team like us,” Fournier said. “We knew going in it was going to be a battle, and that we were going to learn some things along the way.

“This has been a nice start,” Fournier added. “It’s been a surprising start, a nice surprise.”

The Dragons didn’t take any chances. Despite the age and size disparity between the teams, Brunswick came out firing, scoring 32 seconds into the game and adding another two minutes later. A pair of Woodruff goals later in the first quarter deepened the Devils’ hole to four goals.

“One of the goals for this team is just simply to get better,” Glover said. “Tonight showed that we can get better in some aspects of our game. Lewiston tested us in different areas.”

After Woodruff’s third early in the second, the Blue Devils netted their only goal of the first half when Pat Racine fired the ball past keeper Mitchell Smith from the left wing with 8:47 to play.

Sullivan quickly put Brunswick back in control, and Ryan Croatti padded the Dragons’ lead after catching Lewiston keeper Bryan Wagg (12 saves) out of the cage. Sullivan send Brunswick into halftime with another strike for an 8-1 lead.

The Dragons stretched their lead to 12-1 in the third before the Blue Devils found some footing in the fourth. Griffin Wade and Brendon Croteau scored in the final frame for Lewiston to cap the scoring.

The Dragons’ next outing is against perennial Class B powerhouse Cape Elizabeth, while Lewiston will regroup before facing Biddeford on the road Saturday.
