BUCKFIELD — Sacopee Valley and Buckfield battled for eight innings before Alexis Bennett walked and brought home Abby Shields with the winning run, giving the Bucks a 4-3 victory in a softball game Thursday.
The score was tied 3-3 before the Bucks (7-2) loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth. Bennett walked and Shields, who go on with an error, came home.
For the Bucks, Bennett, Ashley Campbell and Shields all doubled. But the key to Buckfield’s victory was defense. The Bucks turned four double plays to frustrate Sacopee Valley. Amber Arsenault went the distance for the Bucks and got the win.
Softball
Messalonskee 5, Edward Little 2
AUBURN — Cassidy Baker singled in Taylor Easler for the eventual game-winning run as Messalonskee grabbed a 5-2 victory over Edward Little in KVAC softball action Thursday afternoon.
Grace Beaudet tried to initiate a rally in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Red Eddies (6-4) with a two-run double, cutting the 4-0 deficit in half.
Pitcher Sarah Hammond struck out 10 for Edward Little, while pitcher Kirsten Pelletier fanned eight for the Eagles (8-2) for the complete game win.
Poland 12, Old Orchard Beach 0
POLAND — Maddie Simard clubbed a home run as Poland trotted off with a 12-0 victory over Old Orchard Beach in softball action Thursday afternoon.
In addition to Simard’s home run, a two-run triple by Kalor Plummer, a two-run single by Michaella Arsenault and a three-run double by Kelsey DeBurra put the Knights (9-2) up 8-0 in the second inning.
Kolby Woods put together a nice outing. She gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out seven during her three innings of work.
Girls’ lacrosse
Gardiner 6, Edward Little 5
AUBURN — Midfielder Nickyia Lovely netted three goals, including the game-clincher, with 5:06 remaining in regulation to lift Gardiner to a 6-5 triumph over Edward Little in KVAC girls’ lacrosse action Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers (2-4) took a 4-3 halftime lead and was tied 5-5 much of the way through the second half. Francesca Haines contributed a pair of goals for Gardiner.
Goalie Mariah Vaillancourt made eight saves for the Red Eddies (1-5), while goalie Kylin Mansir repelled two shots to earn the win in net for Gardiner.
Messalonskee 15, Oxford Hills 5
PARIS — Freshman midfielder Lauren Pickett compiled six goals to lead Messalonskee to a 15-5 victory over Oxford Hills in KVAC girls’ lacrosse action Thursday afternoon.
The Vikings (2-4) picked up their game in the second half, tightening the margin to a one goal stanza. Sophomore midfielder Haley Wakefield was crucial in transition, tallying 10 ground balls and recording an assist for Oxford Hills. Senior attackman Katie Bowie tallied a goal, three ground balls and four shots on goal.
Goalie Samantha Bickford made 10 saves for Oxford Hills, while Sydni Collier stopped five and Gaby Languet arrested four in the winning effort for the Eagles (7-0).
Lewiston 9, Cony 4
AUGUSTA — Kristina Blais and Emily Brochu deposited three goals each as Lewiston downed Cony 9-4 in KVAC girls’ lacrosse action Thursday afternoon.
The Blue Devils (6-2) outshot the Rams 20-9. Pagie Fontaine had five saves in net for Lewiston.Lewiston dominated on offense, scoring three goals to open the second half and extend a 5-1 lead to 8-1 before relaxing a bit. Sarah Coram led the Rams with two goals.
