It’s safe to wager that if the spirits of some of the ancient warriors who used to roam about the woods in this part of the country some hundred years ago, are looking down from the happy hunting grounds these days, they are having some queer sensations. Another complete set of Indian bones has been unearthed from the ground where the new Foss house is being built on Elm street Auburn. This makes the third skeleton that has been found there recently.
50 years ago, 1965
Maine’s most modern stock car racing facilities will be available at the Oxford Plains Speedway when the 1965 season opens under the lights at 8 p.m., Saturday. May 29. Speedway proprietor Bob Bahre said Saturday, “We had hoped to open earlier but in order to give fans advantages of the finished product we feel the two week postponement will be in the best interests of all concerned”. An all-steel grandstand capable of seating 10,200 is more than half completed. Bahre said hot-top around the newly constructed concession stands, entrances and between the stands and the track will also be completed by May 29. Protective fences have been installed including a concrete barrier off the track’s edge and an 18-foot high chain link fence. Bahre from Suffolk, Conn., put the Speedway onto its feet last year after several seasons of mediocrity.
25 years ago, 1990
Every day that the transfer station on the Bald Hill Road, New Gloucester, was open this week, a steady stream of cars, trucks and trailers filled to the brim arrived. “Even selectmen wait for free week,” Head Selectman John Lowe said. Saturday was the final day in a week of amnesty from dumping fees for residents who want to get rid of the big items.
