JAY — It’s been a rough introduction into the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference for the Spruce Mountain baseball and softball teams this spring. Graduation losses over the past two years have reduced both squads to young rosters, who continue to gain experience on a daily basis while facing many of the top teams in Class B.

After opening the season with back-to-back wins, the Phoenix baseball team has dropped nine straight after falling to Leavitt, 11-7, Monday.

Leavitt (4-7) erupted for five runs in the seventh inning racing away to an 11-7 victory over Spruce Mountain (2-9).

Nick Angelo led the Hornets with four RBIs, while Zac Dymond went 3-for-4 with a triple. Julian Kirouac also contributed for Leavitt with an RBI triple.

Noah Preble led the Phoenix with a pair of hits, while starter Nate Goodine suffered the loss.

Spruce Mountain sits in last place in Western Maine Class B standings with five games remaining in the season.

In softball, the Phoenix are running a three-game losing skid, dropping a hard fought 8-6 decision to Leavitt (8-3), Monday.

Hornet left fielder Morgan Knowlton and shortstop Angela Daigle scattered three hits each as Leavitt held on for an 8-6 victory over Spruce Mountain, Monday afternoon.

The Hornets led 5-4 after six innings, and added three runs to their tally in the top of the seventh.

The Phoenix (4-7) attempted a comeback bid, but only scored a pair of runs while leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the final inning.

Spruce Mountain softball holds down 14th place in Western B with five games remaining.
