DEAR SUN SPOTS: Please convey my thanks to the Auburn Shaws customer who turned in my tax refund check that I dropped there just after lunch time on May 19. She saved me the major hassle of getting the government to stop the check and issue a new one. I am so grateful that she and so many other honest caring people live in this area. — A.W. in Lewiston.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: My children will attend school in Lewiston this fall. What is the cost of lunch at Lewiston schools? — Hungry at school.

ANSWER: Recently, the Sun Journal published an article about this topic. It stated: “Beginning this fall, every student in Lewiston will get breakfast and lunch at school without paying, regardless of how much their parents earn, courtesy of the federal government.

“For students who eat lunch every day at school, that’s a $10 savings each week for a high school student, $7.55 a week for an elementary school student.

“Like a growing number of schools across the country, Lewiston is joining the so-called ‘Community Eligibility Provision,’ created under the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the school lunch program.

“It’s the federal government’s push to ensure students don’t go hungry in schools and have access to healthy meals.”
