Paddling in a row boat in the Androscoggin, Tuesday afternoon, the attention of two boys was attracted to a black object, which whirled about in the mad waters beneath the falls. They rowed closer to the object as it struggled toward the stiller water and discovered, in a short time, that it was a rooster. They rescued him. A wet and bedraggled bird was taken to their home on Main street, Auburn, where they gave him a warm bath, a careful drying and put him to roost in the shed. It has been suggested that the came from some flock in the rear of Turner or Center streets above the railroad tracks but how he came in the water is another question.

(Lewiston Daily Sun Page One headline) CLAY STOPS LISTON IN ONE MINUTE OF THE FIRST ROUND — Lewiston lived up to its reputation as a fast-knockout town last night at the Youth Center when heavyweight champion Cassius M. A. Clay put away Charles (Sonny) Liston in a minute of the first round. A Lewiston-Auburn fighter also was involved in one of the quickest knockouts ever recorded, and Tuesday’s episode was understood to be the shortest in the history of heavy championship bouts. Unfortunately, or perhaps otherwise in the long run, there was a cloud of confusion surrounding the sudden finish which raised cries of “fake” and “fix” from members of the 5,000-odd spectator group, who incidentally probably did not fracture the building’s attendance record for paid witnesses set at a local schoolboy hockey game six years ago.

Despite a dreary, wet May, construction is progressing on Auburn Plaza, the 264,706-square-foot retail center being developed on 23 acres, is located at Center Street and Stetson Road and is scheduled for completion in the fall. David Schwartz, New Market Development’s senior vice president/northeast regional partner, said, “This section of the city is basically an untapped market for the under 400,000-square-foot upscale retail center.”
