FAYETTE — This year’s Fayette School Department budget is decidedly low-key.
The 2015-16 school operating budget that will be presented to voters at the June 13 town meeting totals $1,695,891, according to Superintendent Michael Cormier. Last year’s figure used to run the school was $1,761,100.
Cormier pointed out that the budget last year included a supplemental amount that was approved at a special town meeting, after the regular town meeting had taken place. He also noted that this year’s amount includes everything except capital renewal costs.
One of the factors lowering the cost of this year’s school budget is the Fayette School Committee decided against purchasing a new bus. Cormier said he had discussed the feasibility of bus replacement with the Maranacook school department’s transportation director, who recommended against it.
Fayette’s oldest bus is a 2006 Bluebird with 134,000 miles on it. Usually, said Cormier, buses are replaced when they have 250,000 miles or more of travel on them.
“We put more money in the budget for repairs,” he said.
One of the goals the School Committee has set is getting the school’s heating exchange system fixed next fall. There have been persistent problems with some classrooms in the school being much too cold and others being way too hot. Cormier noted that a subcommittee has been formed to look at prices for the work and firms that could do it.
“We may look at approaching taxpayers to pay out of the capital reserve funds for that,” said Cormier, noting a special town meeting would have to be held to approve the funds.
Money has been included in this year’s budget to upgrade the school’s technology. Cormier said that in the first year of the plan, the focus would be on infrastructure and wiring, while student equipment would be replaced during the second year.
