LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women has announced its activites for the month of June.
A Trauma Recovery and Empowerment group, run by Health Affiliates, will meet from 3-4:30 p.m. in June. An AA group, the only one in Lewiston, meets on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. The Bisexual, Lesbian and Transgendered group for women and their friends or family meets at 2:00 p.m. May 28.
The center is announcing a new support group called Women for Sobriety. It meets Wednesdays from 2:30-4:00 beginning May 20, and will be led by Lise Pelletier. It is a step-based group that is an alternative or supplement to Alcoholics Anonymous and is for women only. The center is asking anyone interested or who has questions to please call. There are no fees or registration required.
The Center for Wisdom’s Women will host a “Quiet Day” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12, led by Pat Gardiner. This is a time for silent reflection and rest (no talking, no cell phones or electronics). A light lunch is provided for those who sign up ahead of time.
A celebration is being planned for all day Monday, June 22. The center is welcoming suggestions for games and activites.
Garden planting is set for June 3.
The morning of June 4, a “Dog Tales” day is planned, where women can talk about their dogs, share pictures, read dog stories and watch videos.
The morning of June 4 will include a hair day, which will include both silly and helpful information about hair, its history and fashion. A movie on the theme follows in the afternoon.
The center will host Paul Drowns from the nutrition center at noon on June 17 for the Peasant Pantry Prep group. The participants will prepare a simple one-dish meal that will be served to the wider community between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18. Reservations are appreciated. There is no charge for the meal although donations are appreciated. The income is split between the team members who prepared and served the meal.
The group will host a “What’s Cookin’?” class at 12:30 p.m. on June 9. The center will reserve time to make and eat a summer salad is at 10:00 a.m. on June 23.
The Book Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Monday, June 30, with Ann Auer leading discussion. The group will start a new book, “Seedfolk” by Barry Lopez. It is a story about community gardening and transformation. A few copies of the book from the library will be available for borrowing at the center.
The center will host “Playing with Poetry” class at 10:00 a.m. June 20, led by Hannah Tardie of Bates College. It involves gently experiencing poems through both reading and writing. Tardie will also offer a collage class at 10:00 a.m. on June 8.
The weekly writing workshop with Pat Gardiner continues at 10:00 a.m. every Monday.
On Monday afternoons from 12:30-1:30, the center encourages women to bring their own hand sewing project to the center – anything that needs repair or quilting or other fabric crafts.
The center is also asking for donations of hygiene items to give away. The needs are full-sized, unopened, basic items such as shampoo and conditioner, tampons and pads, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Unopened smaller sample sizes will also currently be accepted to be used for outreach packs. The center accepts these donations continuously.
The center’s hours are Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is closed on Fridays for June, July and August. A full calendar of events can be seen at the center’s website. All women are welcome, programs are offered free of charge and no appointments are needed. Oatmeal breakfasts are available daily and the Center has a shower available for use.
