It was a great day for a Mt. Vernon Memorial Day Parade. All the local folks seemed to have come to witness it. There were people lined up and down the streets waiting for the parade to begin!
You could hear all the clapping, and waving of the flags, Smiling faces were everywhere. The Parade ended in Mt. Vernon Village at the War Memorial honoring our fallen heroes.
Clyde Dyar, retired U.S. Air Force veteran and Mt. Vernon selectman, introduced the honored guests. Pastor Jay Wilson of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church gave the invocation and benediction. Gordon Webber, a Vietnam War veteran retired from the Army, was the guest speaker. Mr. Dyar raised the flag as the National Anthem was played.
Gordon began the ceremony by asking when was the last time “YOU” said the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag? He then asked the folks to join in the Pledge of Alliance to the Flag.
Mr. Webber spoke of Patriots, all the back to George Washington and our forefathers, some who gave the ultimate sacrifice, He also talked about those that are POW”S and MIA”s of recent wars who are still missing.
Several local men proudly gave the 21 gun salute over Minnehonk Lake. The program ended with Pastor Wilson giving the benediction.
The crowds then headed to Lizzie Chase Park where the Village Market was selling everything from pies to plants and everything in between! There was live music, face painting for the children. Minnehonk Ridge Riders (snowmobile club), sold out on hamburgers and hot dogs.
Our compliments to the people who made a great Memorial Day parade happen! Thank you!
Have a great week. Get out and get some sun. Invite someone over for a cup of coffee. Enjoy life to the fullest.
