NORRIDGEWOCK — Two young men were arrested early Saturday morning after leading Somerset County sheriff’s deputies on a brief pursuit, according to Chief Deputy James Ross.

Deputy Ron Blodgett was checking on a disabled vehicle on the side of Route 2 shortly after midnight when an eastbound car driven by Randall McEwen, 18, of Canton, nearly sideswiped the deputy’s cruiser, Ross said.

Blodgett returned to his patrol car and attempted to stop McEwen but he sped up, reaching speeds of nearly 90 miles per hour, according to Ross.

The pursuit only lasted 3.5 miles, but McEwen allegedly used both lanes in his attempt to elude the deputy. Ross said the vehicle’s tires were flattened by a spike mat in front of the Maine State Police barracks.

McEwen continued on four flat tires for about a mile before losing control. He was arrested and charged with eluding a police officer, passing a road block, OUI and driving without a license. A passenger, Evan Hutchinson, 20, of Canton, was also arrested and charged with violating conditions of release, attaching false registration plates and permitting unlawful use of a motor vehicle, Ross said.

A third passenger in the vehicle was not charged. No injuries occurred in the pursuit.

Skowhegan and state police assisted sheriff’s deputies with the arrests.
