WATERVILLE — Two women were arrested after an elderly woman’s purse was stolen from her apartment on Friday, according to police.
Lindsay Gillis, 26, and Renee Belisle, 33, both of Waterville, are facing burglary and theft charges. Police say shortly after 3 p.m. police got a call from the 85-year-old victim’s daughter, according to Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.
Rumsey said the victim was taking a nap in her living room and saw a woman in a floral print shirt grab the purse and flee.
The victim notified her daughter, who called police, and a Waterville detective immediately spotted a woman matching the description of one of the suspects, Rumsey said.
Patrol units responded and located both suspects, and the stolen purse was found nearby, the deputy chief said. An identification card had been thrown down a storm drain, allegedly by Gillis, but sewer district officials were able to fish it out.
Gillis and Belisle were both charged with burglary and theft, while Gillis is also accused of falsifying physical evidence and possession of marijuana, Rumsey said.
Police returned the contents of the purse, including $200 cash, to the victim. Both Gillis and Belisle were taken to the Kennebec County Jail.
