BATH — Spruce Mountain High School senior Sam Brenner made the most of his first Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship meet, winning the 1,600-meter racewalk on Saturday.
Brenner’s time of 7:03.63 nudged him into first place past second place finisher Billy Chambers of Waterville, who finished with a time of 7:08.19. Spruce Mountain’s Trevor Judd grabbed third place with a time of 7:27.74.
Brenner, who is the two-time defending Class B racewalk state champion, will go for a three peat at the state championship this Saturday in Bath. Judd will look to challenge him.
Adam Wilcox garnered a fourth place finish in the 400 meters at the KVAC’s, finishing with a time of 54.79 seconds. He, too, has qualified to compete at the state meet.
Other participants for the Phoenix boys in the KVAC’s included Alex Greenleaf, who was 5th in the boys 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:01.36; Tucker Smith, 9th in the boys 300 meter hurdles at 50.52 seconds; Zachary Whitney, 14th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.52 seconds; Ethan Dow, 16th in the 110 meter hurdles at 21.88; Benjamin Nichols, 11th in the boys 1600-meter at 5:11.11 and 19th in the 400 meters at 59.40; the boys 4×800 relay (Andrew Wilcox, August Thornton, Jason Howes, and Kyle Wilkins), 10th at 10:41.17; and the boys 4×400 relay (Andrew Wilcox, Nichols, Whitney, and Adam Wilcox), 7th at 3:54.84.
Belfast Area High School won the meet with 150.50 points. The Phoenix placed 12th out of 15 teams with 24 points.
The Spruce Mountain girls had a trio of individual athletes score points for them in the meet, and also the 4×400 relay team. Sadie Storer raced to a sixth place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 1:05.76, while Calleigh Norris was 7th in the 300 meter hurdles at 54.35 seconds and Gretchen Krout finished seventh in the javelin at 84’1″. The 4×400 relay team of Norris, Krout, Alexis Beardsley, and Storer came through with a sixth place finish in a time of 4:47.04.
Other events the Phoenix girls competed in included Storer, 12th in the 200 meters at 29.75; Norris, 12th in the 100 meter hurdles at 19.52; Beardsley, tied for 10th in the 100 meters at 14.22, 15th in the 200 meters at 30.21; and the girls 4×100 relay team of Beardsley, Sydney Shaffer, Emma DiPompo and Mikenzie Parker, 11th with a time of 59.15.
Waterville won the girls event with 168.50 points. Spruce Mountain tied for 14th with six points.
