Otisfield stands to lose more than $30,000 a year if the proposed wireless telecommunication facility ordinance is approved.
Otisfield has a tax increment financing district, which includes town-owned land off the Bolsters Mills and Hidden Lakes roads. Facilities in these industrial district sites could generate $30,000 to $40,000, per-facility, of non-tax annual revenue.
Municipalities around the state have come up with innovative ways to utilize their TIFs to the economic advantage of their towns. Otisfield can amend its TIF to include wireless telecommunication facilities. That could benefit the telecom companies through credit enhancement agreements. It would benefit Otisfield by allowing us to advance our emergency communication system and lower the overall mil rate.
Otisfield could also designate other areas of our town as TIFs specifically for wireless facilities in order to generate money for projects.
