1924 – 2015

HALLOWELL — Natalie H. Jones of Monmouth died peacefully Sunday, June 7, at Woodlands Assisted Living Center of Hallowell, with her daughter by her side.

She was born in Monmouth on Jan. 18, 1924, the only child of Gerald Packard Hall and Elsie Dayken Hall. Except for three years in Auburn when she was a child, she lived in Monmouth her entire life.

Natalie graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1942. She composed the music and lyrics for the class ode, which was sung during the graduation exercises at Cumston Hall. In June 1945, she graduated from Farmington Normal School (now University of Maine at Farmington) and in July, she married Stanley Tallman Jones of Wales.

In December 1949, she was asked to help out for a few days at the Monmouth Town Office. Those “few days” lasted until September 1957, when her first daughter was born. She worked there again, later in life, for another three years. She insisted on staying home while her three daughters were young, continuing to do bookkeeping at home, as well as baking and sewing for several families in the area.

When her daughters were older, she went back to work — first as the office manager at WBLM Radio and later for a local CPA, while continuing her office work at home.

Natalie enjoyed organic gardening long before it became common and preserved her family’s food supply. She loved listening to classical music and watching the Boston Pops. She taught all three daughters how to sew and was an excellent seamstress who spent time working on costumes for the Theater at Monmouth. She was well-known for baking foods to help local groups such as Cumston Library and giving needhams or rolls to neighbors and friends at Christmas. She loved feeding the birds and squirrels and passed on her compassion for nature and animals to her daughters.

Natalie had been a member of the Monmouth Grange and Boynton Chapter No. 88 OES, holding offices in both organizations. At the same time, she was active in the United Church of Monmouth. She was a member of the choir and assisted with Sunday school and Bible school.

Survivors are her daughters, Nina Jones of Westbrook, Lisa Jones of Clinton, and Sonia Godbout and her husband, Russ Godbout, of Mount Vernon; and grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Godbout of Bath and Zachary Godbout of Mount Vernon.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley, in March 2002.

The family would like to thank MaineGeneral Hospice and the caring, attentive staff at Woodlands Memory Care, who cared for Natalie with love and compassion.
