1939 – 2015
AUBURN — Fredrick Carl Walters (Frederick ), 75, of Poland. On Wednesday, June 10, Fred lost his 20 year battle with cancer. He died peacefully surrounded by family at the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice on Stetson Road in Auburn. He had previously been cared for at home by his wife and hospice services since March.
He was born July 2, 1939, in Montrose, Pa., to Florence Catlin Walters and Carl Walters,
Fred attended Montrose schools and was a member of the Class of 1957 at Montrose Area High School.
In 1957, he joined the U.S. Navy and was at first stationed in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Later, he made several trips to Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica (where he was a diver under the ice). He received an honorable discharge in 1960 and moved back to Montrose, Pa., where he worked briefly in construction and for the telephone company. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1961, and was stationed first in Salem, Mass., and then in Naples, Italy, where he was an aviation electrician flying many missions into Libya. After an honorable discharge from active Coast Guard service, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves doing duty at the Boothbay Harbor station.
He enjoyed Coast Guard camaraderie through Cosmic Air, an organization of retired “Coasties” with reunions in the Reno, Nev., and Lake Tahoe, Calif., area.
In 1969, he married the former Sheryl Houston of Auburn.
Fred worked for a time at Arrow Hart in Lewiston as personnel manager. He later worked as an assistant maintenance director for S.A.D. 17, then Agway Energy in Auburn and retired from Gendron Oil of South Paris, where he helped design, install and maintain heating systems. After he retired, he taught vocational heating courses for the Oxford Hills night school. He enjoyed this very much.
Fred was a member of Tyrian Lodge in Mechanic Falls and a former member of the Kora Temple Shrine. He was a member of the VFW Post in Montrose, Pa., and enjoyed his yearly visits to that post. He also was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the Antarctican Society and the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum, where he enjoyed displaying his model tugboat each March.
Fred enjoyed fishing with friends, kayaking with his wife and granddaughter, travel, wine making with his friend Al, cooking and baking — especially with his granddaughter, Alexis, and numerous cruises in the Caribbean. The thing Fred enjoyed most was spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife, Sheryl, of East Poland; his daughter, Pamela, son-in-law, Christopher Oberg and granddaughter, Alexis, of Somersworth, N.H.; his mother, Florence Guard; sisters, Linda Conklin and Sandra Walters; his Aunt Arlene Catlin and Aunt ‘Bun’ Ball, all of Montrose Pa.; sister-in-law, Janice Rawson of Poland; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and great friends.
He was predeceased by his father.
The family would like to thank Androscoggin Home Health Care for treating Fred with care and dignity during his illness, especially his intake nurse, Tammy; his regular nurse, Nikki; his aide, Michelle; and all the others who came to help him. Special thanks to Dr. Trisha Gushue for the special care and time she gave to Fred.
