The careless replacing of the cover on a small reservoir in the sidewalk on Maple street, Lisbon, nearly caused the death of Paul, five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Karkos, Sunday evening. In company with his brother, who is one year older, Paul was going by the engine house when he suddenly disappeared from view, The brother’s outcry called help and in the darkness no sign of the child could be seen. Fred K. Small jumped into the hole and discovered Paul with his fingers fastened into the brick of the wall, with his face just out of the water, which was 7 feet deep. By means of a ladder, which was quickly procured, both were taken out safely.

The state has no money to pay court security officers in Androscoggin County, state officials told County Commissioner Henry Bernier Tuesday, but the commissioners stopped short of withdrawing the officers from the courts. Security officers in the courts are provided by the Sheriff’s Department, and state law requires the state to reimburse the county for their salaries on a quarterly basis. The county has not received payment for services since the end of September 1989, and is considering withdrawing the security officers.
