LEWISTON — An early-morning fire that severely damaged a two-apartment home Monday is being investigated for possible human element.

Lewiston Fire Inspector Paul Ouellette said Monday that a fire at 97 Webster St. started at approximately 2:30 a.m. at the front of the building, near a 120-gallon propane tank. A relief valve on the tank which was leaking gas ignited like a torch. Fire crews were able to extinguish it about two hours later.

Ouellette said the building, which was insured, sustained about $130,000 damage. The two tenants had insurance, he said.

He said the possibility of human element is being considered as a cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.

There were no reports of injuries.

The American Red Cross of Maine is assisting the tenants.
